When given the project, I was thinking about making a programable clock, possibly allowing a user to customize it in anyway they want. Given my somewhat annoying watch (i set it up to alert the changes between periods) I was thinking of a way to make less annoying notifications (something mechanical).
I started some research on instructables, since there was a lot of Arduino related stuff on there. I found a watch with an exposed printed circuit board by carjo3000. This very cool and nerdy, and shows the capabilities of Arduino well. This watch seems too a bit complex for this class; one needs to program a separate chip and build a case for a normal sized watch.
I later found a "Wise Clock" by florinc, a large LED display that not only tell time, but also displays scrolling philosophical quotes. This also shows the capabilities of Arduino well, but uses a different board. Examining the code, I found a lot of stuff i did not know about. I was inspired to make a programable clock more focused the user. One that can be useful for those who do not take this class. Or maybe even one that could introduce younger students to programing.
